From the Legend of Fionn

Every year at the Samhain (Sow-in) Festival,
Alain, the man of darkness, terrorizes Tara.
It is a deep shame to the High King, because it is
a designated time of peace. The people of Ireland
come to trade their goods and celebrate the harvest
and the beginning of the new year.
No-one dares to challenge the man from the land of Shee
and the powerful tricks of magic he uses against them.

Cormac McArt, the High King of all Ireland, is determined
to stop the terror. The finest warriors in the land will
attend the gathering to participate in games.
He will put out a call for one of them
to face Alain, and stop his
destructive ways.

A banquet is given on the first evening of the festival.
The king looked out over the crowd and is pleased to see
Goll McMorna and his men seated at the tables.
They are known for their fighting skills.
King Cormac waits until the people are
relaxed and talking among themselves.
When he feels the time is right, he signals the steward
to ring the chimes, signaling for silence. The
great hall becomes quiet and the steward calls out:

"King Cormac has determined this year
will bring an end to Alain's reign of terror.
Gathered in this hall are the finest warriors of
our island. Which of you will face the man of Shee
this night, before he can bring harm to the people
gathered here?"

.
The announcement is met with silence. The warriors look
from one to another and shift in their seats.
Finally, all eyes turn to Goll and Cailte,
the two bravest men in the land,
but, they too, remain silent.

The king realizes that
it will be left to him to face the man of Shee.
He leans forward to stand, when far back in the hall
a young, fair-haired giant stands to his feet.

"I will face the man of Shee,"
the young man declares.
It is Fionn, who has prepared his whole life
for this moment.

Young Fionn strikes a bargain with the king and
walked out through the gates of Tara.
Many a maiden sighs and many a man
shakes his head at the lad's folly, for they
believe they will never see him again.

The moaning of the wind
does not become the cry of the Banshee to Fionn,
for he knows its many moods and sounds.
Raised in the wilderness, he has no fear
of the night.

After a time there is a change in the darkness.
There is a strange movement of the clouds.
The night animals go silent.
The night becomes darker than the normal darkness.
Alain is creeping on silent feet toward Tara.

Stay tuned. More to come.
