Donegal Castle

A replica of how the castle looked in the 1500's.
The Castle and monastery was built by the Chieftain
Hugh Roe O'Donnell (1461-1505).
It was later occupied by the flamboyant
Manus (d. 1563) who married five times
and had nineteen children.
The descendants of Manus vied for the
chieftainship and warred with the
O'Neills until Hugh Dubh was
inaugurated.
In 1592, when he was an old man,
he gave up the chieftainship
in favor of his son
Red Hugh.
The lower level, where the arms
were stored.
The store room
The narrow stairway to the
upper floors.
The main hall.
The roof is held together with wooden pegs.
Iron nails would corrode the wood beams.
